Replaced Walter Ulbricht in 1971, because he accep-
ted the West German opening to the East Countries.
Supported by Brezhnev, soviet leader at that time.
Honecker was leader of DDR up to October 18, 1989.

Minister of State Security, army general. Mielke was
probably the much feared man in DDR.

Egon Krenz

Throughout his career, Krenz held a number of senior
posts in SED. He was also General Secretary of the
Communist youth movement, the FDJ. On December
7, 1989,
Krenz the DDR last Communist head of state
resigned as leader.
